Originally from Memphis, the 25-year-old rapper - born Markeyvius LaShun Cathey - grew up rocking local giants Three 6 Mafia and Project Pat. When the rapper begins to take control of his own dreams, he takes under the wing of his cousin Young Dolph, the late King of Memphis. But, despite these urban influences, there is no mistaking the big influence that Glock says if you think of a mile: "Eddie Murphy," says Glock. "To see how he can play different roles, different situations and different emotions, but he's still the same person when he goes home at the end of the day ...."

"It depends on the mood I'm in," Glock says of his recording process. "If I'm down or if I don't bring energy, I won't go to the studio. So every time I'm in the studio, I'm full of joy - dynamic."

That motivation, he tells me, only strengthens his commitment to his work. "I'm the type that doesn't really care what people think," he continued. "Whether it's bad or good. I have this thing that I'm very confident about, you don't tell me. If you tell me, I'll take it as thanks.
An unstable youth can support this stability. When Glock was 20 months old, his mother was arrested, and he spent most of the next 16 years in state and government facilities. When his father was not around, he lived with his maternal grandmother and his mother, his grandmother. It's a Glock
The series is named after his great-grandfather's favorite colour. "My grandparents didn't play the kind of music that made me who I am. But it was easy to get into rap music, and at the age of 12, he recorded his first solo single on a Future beat.
. "I didn't go looking for [rap], it was right in front of me. I found it," he said.

The result of this musical education is the rap music known as Memphis - from Glock's Southern drawl booming with natural confidence, to his ability to imitate Mafia 6 star Juicy J's inspirational music. But there was no commercial conflict in his reign. It often veers towards high-energy beats made from pounding drum samples, odd patterns and urban swagger. Then you get a song like this

] two years ago,” explains Glock. "[Memphis producer] Teddy Walton sent me the beat while I was in the studio. I was always in the moment, talking about my day-to-day life, what I'm doing and what I've done. It just comes to me ."
It was only a month after that incident that the tragedy of Young Dolph's death occurred. The 36-year-old was killed by robbers at his favorite Memphis cookie place, sparking widespread anger in the city and a request to councilor JB Smiley Jr. The death sent Glock into a spiral. The song, mid-tempo and sad, sees Glock cry as he admits that he wants to drink away the pain, before realizing that he needs to wipe away the tears and get back on the bandwagon. "I can't go back and mark that dark spot," Glock later said
. "I just try to get out of that. It's hard. That's a letter to him. I didn't do that for the fans, the media or anything. I did that for me."

Still, the song is a testament to the kind of self-writing he's known for. "I only know about Glock," he said. "I can only tell you what I do. I stay my way and I don't try to turn [my art] into something it's not."

He may not be taking other rappers on his own projects, but Glock has expanded his vision. He collaborated with Denzel Curry on a remix of the rapper's Florida song Walkin', which became the lead single on his album.
. The two have a natural chemistry. "It's different," says Glock. "I like to do things that people don't expect Glock to do. Denzel loves what he does and I respect him for that.
In the coming days, Glock will declare his commitment to Paper Route Empire as the company faces a lack of leadership. It wants to continue into the future uninterrupted by Covid-19 lockdown measures. "The pandemic created and destroyed many people. I didn't let it stop me," he said. "It is not important to move around. If you know how to take care of business, you will not have any problems. I always think and hope for the best, nothing bad will happen. In my mind it affects businesses.
Dolph's death fueled Glock's determination to make his cousin proud. For some, this palatial style makes him look like he's carrying the torch of Memphis rap. But get in, and you'll see that it's his magic on the microphone and his dedication to the core pillars of his sound that make his rise. There is no sign of a database.
